The signs carried by this segment of marchers in the 1968 Labor Day Parade in New York City include calls to "Stamp Out Racism" and "End the Vietnam War Now." By 1968, a number of unions had expressed their opposition to the Vietnam war, but the sentiment was far from unanimous. The leadership of the AFL-CIO still supported the war, and an anti-war march of students and others in downtown Manhattan was attacked by a number of members of New York City's building trades unions.
